BMI
The body mass index (BMI), or Quetelet index, is a controversial statistical measurement which compares a person’s weight and height. Though it does not actually measure the percentage of body fat, it is a useful tool to estimate a healthy body weight based on how tall a person is. Due to its ease of measurement and calculation, it is the most widely used diagnostic tool to identify weight problem within a population including:underweight, overweight and obesity.
Optimal weight
The most accurate assessment of your ideal weight takes into account the composition of your body – how much of your weight is lean body mass (muscle and bone) and how much is body fat. For optimum health, body fat should be no more than 20% of total body weight for men and 30% for women.
Basal metabolic rate
Your basal metabolic rate, or BMR, is the minimum calorific requirement needed to sustain life in a resting individual. It can be looked at as being the amount of energy (measured in calories) expended by the body to remain in bed asleep all day!
BMR can be responsible for burning up to 70% of the total calories expended, but this figure varies due to different factors (see below). Calories are burned by bodily processes such as respiration, the pumping of blood around the body and maintenance of body temperature. Obviously the body will burn more calories on top of those burned due to BMR.
BMR is the largest factor in determining overall metabolic rate and how many calories you need to maintain, lose or gain weight. BMR is determined by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, as follows: Genetics, Gender, Age, Weight, Body Surface Area, Body Fat Percentage, Diet, Body Temperature/Health, External temperature, Glands, Exercise.

Target heart rate
The Target Heart Rate (THR), or Training Heart Rate, is a desired range of heart rate reached duringaerobic exercise which enables one’s heart and lungs to receive the most benefit from a workout. This theoretical range varies based on one’s physical condition, genderand previous training. Below are two ways to calculate one’s Target Heart Rate. In each of these methods, there is an element called “intensity” which is expressed as a percentage. The THR can be calculated by using a range of 50%–85% intensity. However, it is crucial to derive an accurate HRmax to ensure these calculations are meaningful (see above).

Most people equate a high weight loss diet with a diet plan that promotes losing a lot of weight quickly. We always seem to be in a hurry, and losing weight is no exception. We didn’t put on our extra weight overnight, but that’s how we expect to lose it. So, what are the pluses and minuses of trying to lose a lot of weight quickly?
Assuming you start a fad diet or crash diet that advertises losing lots of weight fast, and manage to stick to it, the plus is you’ve lost a lot of weight. If that is your only goal, then there don’t have to be any other pluses. However, what are the minuses?
If the diet plan you chose is an intense one which will last for a few weeks and does not mention any sort of permanent change then this is a diet plan that will have you balloon up to your original weight as fast as you lost it. How do you feel after being on this diet for a few weeks? Do you feel deprived? Do you feel like crap? Have you lost any real weight or is it mostly water weight?
The compromised state of your health is certainly a big minus, but what about your appearance? A common complaint from people who lose a lot of weight quickly from extreme dieting is that their skin doesn’t tighten up. Dieters are left with unsightly loose and hanging skin. This can negatively affect your body image and self-esteem, a big minus.
A high weight loss diet program is not about starving yourself for two weeks. Weight loss is extremely difficult when you feel like you are depriving yourself. Instead of being a positive and exciting experience, losing weight becomes a struggle against yourself. A good diet plan is one that you can keep up for a long period of time, and will include lifestyle changes that you can accept as permanent. No matter how much or how little weight you want to lose, this is the type of plan that is truly workable for the long term. If you want to lose a lot of weight and you want to keep it off, this is how you must do it.
Don’t be fooled into equating high weight loss with fast weight loss. They simply do not equate. Weight loss can be a difficult task, but you don’t have to make it more difficult than it needs to be. In order to permanently get rid of the fat from your body, you need to understand one simple rule: burn more calories then you consume. If you can fully understand that then you are on your way to losing weight and keeping it off for life.
There is a lot of hype out there about weight loss, and some flat out misinformation. When it comes to dieting, what you don’t know can hurt your health, your self-esteem, and your wallet. Dieting Facts and Myths cuts through the hype and flim flam and delivers straight talk about dieting and weight loss.
