Losing Weight With a Low Fat Diet

I'm not excessively overweight, but I do tend to carry between 5 and 10 pounds more than I'd like to. The biggest reason for the extra weight is that I have an incurable sweet tooth and also love to snack on junk food. Fortunately, I do enjoy exercising, so my bad eating habits don't end up hurting me too much. Still, when I really need to look my best, such as for an important event like a wedding or some other party, I go on a strict low fat diet for a couple months. This always seems to work for me.

There are many different low fat diet plans out there, so before getting started, I recommend checking out a few of them on the Internet. In my experience, the biggest difference between these diets is how strict they are. As a general rule of thumb, nutritionists advise consuming no more than 65 grams of saturated and non-saturated fats per day if you're eating 2,000 calories worth of food. When you're on a low fat diet, that number can fall anywhere between 20 and 40 grams, and should consist of mostly non-saturated fats, which are the healthy kind.

For those of us that have tried — and failed — at dieting before, I think the most critical element is coming up with a menu plan that you like. There are many ready-made low fat diet systems circulating online, and most of them come with a number of meal suggestions. What I recommend is picking and choosing from those until you find two weeks' worth of meals (that's 21 in all) that you're absolutely sure you can live with. It's important that you at least somewhat enjoy the food on your low fat diet so that you're not tempted to stray and binge on fries, burgers, pizza, potato chips, cookies, or other prohibited items that can derail your progress. I've found that including a few of your favorite foods in very limited quantities can help cut down on cravings and keep you on the right track.

Exercise is another crucial component of a low fat diet. In addition to healthier eating habits, you have to start getting exercise on a daily basis. Experts recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate activity each day. If you've lived a mostly sedentary lifestyle for the past few years, you might want to start out with 30 minutes of walking or biking. Once you build up some strength and stamina, you can attempt more challenging exercises such as running or spinning. Either way, you should see some dramatic improvements in your appearance if you can follow a low fat diet and work a bit of moderate exercising into your day.
