Money Saving Tips For the Flat Belly Diet Foods
Diets can be expensive. From A system like Nutri-System where you have to pay for all your prepackaged meals to following something like Weight Watchers in which you have to pay for memberships fees on top of your own grocery expenses. Following the Flat Belly Diet doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. It's actually a quite affordable eating plan.
I have some money saving tips for you that I learned from my own experience buying foods for this plan.
Probably the most expensive initial cost for the eating plan is the nuts and seeds purchases. First of all, some of the seeds mentioned in the pocket guide book might be called something else in your grocery store. For example, some of the recipes call for pumpkin seeds (not in the shelled form like we are used to making on our own from Halloween pumpkins). These pumpkin seeds look like large sunflower seeds and have a similar taste. I discovered while shopping at Trader Joe's that pumpkin seeds are also called Pepitas. You are more likely to encounter pumpkin seeds still in the white shell at your local grocery store but will find the de-shelled version at specialty stores like Cosentino's, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.
I hate to knock the local stores but they are not your friend when it comes to saving you on nuts and seeds. You will pay nearly $3.00 for a 4 ounce package of almonds versus buying a 12 ounce package of almonds at Trader Joe's for $6.00. So, avoid the local grocery store on your nuts and seek out a specialty grocery store if possible.
The Nut bar in your local grocery store (if you are lucky to have one) will save you money. In the Nut bar you can purchase tubs of fresh almond butter, cashew butter and peanut butter all with the option of being salted or unsalted. These fresh butters have a shelf life of 4-6 months in the refrigerator if stored properly. You can expect to pay about $5.00 for about 1/2 a pound of almond butter. This amount should last about 2 months for one person.
You'll want to buy your nuts in bulk since it is cheaper and believe it or not, most nuts can be stored anywhere form 3-9 months in the refrigerator and 9-12 months if stored in the freezer. Pine nuts are about the only refrigerator exception. They have a very short shelf life and can only store in the refrigerator for 1 month but 6 months in the freezer.
You're probably wondering why I have not mentioned buying nuts from Costco or Sam's Club right? I have yet to see Costco sell raw nuts. They sell fancy nuts which have been salted and may contain preservatives. It's best to buy your nuts and seeds in the raw natural state without any added salt.
If you want to buy your nuts online, you can try a site like sunorganicfarm.com. You can buy raw almonds for about $13.00/per 1 lb. Bag.
